The history of fire insurance

The history of fire insurance began in the aftermath of the Great Fire of London in 1666. The fire razed 436 acres of London including 13,000 homes. This venture proved successful and by 1680 Barbon established The Fire Office, England's first fire insurance company to insure brick and frame homes.
