Leo and Lillian Goodwin established GEICO in the mid-1930s, selling auto insurance to federal employees and military officers in the Washington, D.C. area. GEICO enjoyed steady growth over the next several decades. In 1995, GEICO became a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway. GEICO is the fourth largest auto insurer in the U.S.
